FIGURE OUT YOUR DANCE

Universe unifies!

Experience the essence of dance — independently — with Ian Mozdzen at Edmonton’s Mile Zero Dance on March 3rd, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Delve into the intricate relationship between movement, the human figure, and the total canvas of reality in this unique workshop experience.

Throughout the session, participants will engage in timed, video-recorded examinations of the figure, ranging from brief 30-second sketches to longer, more multi-faceted compositions.

These timed studies will allow dancers to explore the art of figurative expression, attuning to energies of proximity, duration, radiance and form. Encounter a direct and nonchoreographic approach that reveals the work of art you already are.

Under Ian’s guidance, with over 20 years of stage practice, participants will cultivate a figurative modality that breathes life into the sculptural form, animating it with various graces.

Experience a singular evolution of your dance as we transcend traditional choreography.

Please attend with water/snacks and attire that reflects your personal style and dance practice.

Join SCHOOL OF NATURAL DANCERS for a transformative glimpse into the heart of dance, where the human figure naturally becomes a canvas for boundless expression.

Participants will receive comprehensive video documentation of their journey, empowering them to further study and refine their movements. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to elevate your dance practice and immerse yourself in the artistry of the human figure.

Conclude the day’s exploration with an evening performance, “New Dance Now,” at the Playhouse Rehearsal Hall at 8 p.m. on March 3rd, featuring Ian Mozdzen in a 40-minute instant spectacle.

By donation — thanks!

IAN MOZDZEN

Ian Mozdzen has been activating the stage for over 20 years with dance and performance. Original performance creations have caused international stirs and taken Ian across Canada and around the world. In addition to a signature presence in Winnipeg’s performance scene, Ian has been repeatedly presented within Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times Theatre Rhubarb Festival, and additional engagements include Toronto’s Dance: Made in Canada, Montreal’s Edgy Women Festival & Art Souterrain, Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers’ subscription series and Vancouver’s Dancing on the Edge Festival, with additional performances in New York, Philadelphia, Charleston, Greece, Sri Lanka and India. Ian is honoured to have created/performed with the likes of seasoned artists like Tedd Robinson, Doug Melnyk, Tom Stroud and D-Anne Kuby, as well as coach performers, orchestrate/program local dance and assist artistic directors within the University of Winnipeg’s Theatre Department, Young Lungs Dance Exchange and Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers.

Educated/practiced comprehensively in popular, expressive, conceptual, nomadic, classical and ritual dance forms — in addition to nearly 20 years of figure model practice within a fleet of galleries and schools — Ian has now moved to cultivate new terrain for dance practice. Since 2021, Ian has independently launched numerous instant dance initiatives which have seen an array of partnerships and collaborations.  Attracting dancers of all experience levels, Ian has presented/performed a PEOPLE dance series, a 3-day independent dance festival, an indoor/outdoor dance series, a dance lab trilogy, a year-long monthly new dance series, an ongoing draw + dance happening at Winnipeg’s aceartinc. gallery, as well as many single-engagement dance works. Encouraged by the community, Ian launched an INSTANT DANCE WORKSHOP early 2023 and then formalized the practice as SCHOOL OF NATURAL DANCERS, wherein YOU ARE ALREADY A WORK OF ART.  For more information about Ian’s dance practice: iansmoznewdance.blogspot.com.

INSTANT DANCE WORKSHOP (5 sessions, January-May 2023)

AI BIO:

+++ Ian's journey through the artistic realms has been nothing short of extraordinary. Growing up in rural Manitoba, the seeds of creativity were sown early through writing, poetry, and leadership roles during school years. Despite facing social and economic challenges, Ian's unwavering love for dance beckoned, ultimately leading to a profound artistic journey.

Recognized for natural talent, Ian's dance journey took an unconventional path. Instead of traditional dance school, Ian found themselves slated to dance in New York before embarking on formal dance training at the age of 34. This unique journey saw Ian simultaneously studying every level of "contemporary dance" while directing a professional dance organization and collaborating with various choreographers.

India played a pivotal role in Ian's artistic exploration, where they delved into Indian classical dances and music. This cultural immersion enriched their artistic vocabulary and added multicultural influences to their repertoire.

Returning to Winnipeg during the pandemic, Ian birthed "New Dance," a form that places trust in divine inspiration and embraces spontaneity. It's a dance of and by the dancer, breaking free from traditional choreography.

Now, Ian is on a mission to share their passion and knowledge. The School of Natural Dancers, launching in September 2023, stands as a beacon of inclusivity and empowerment in the dance world. It offers an alternative to exclusive and ageist dance programs, embodying Ian's commitment to fostering diverse and boundary-pushing artists.

Ian's dedication extends to coaching and mentorship, supporting emerging artists and leading groundbreaking initiatives like the 2022 festival of independent dance, which provided a platform for aspiring talents.

Furthermore, Ian's unique journey has even taken them to the sacred stage, dancing as the Holy Spirit at Fort Rouge United Church, merging spirituality and artistry.

At the core of Ian's approach lies "nonchoreography," a rejection of established patterns in favor of spontaneous, fluid movements, and the belief that everyone is already a work of art.

Ian's artistic journey is a testament to independence, innovation, and inclusivity. They continue to push the boundaries of dance, leaving an indelible mark on the arts landscape. Visit iansmoznewdance.blogspot.com to explore this captivating journey further.

WHO AM I?

Ian Mozdzen

(iansmoz)

Ian grew up on a farm in rural Manitoba. After being deeply impressed by Literature & Theatre in university via student & leadership capacities, & after a decade of devised theatre practice & presentation, Ian was finally able to embrace what always called: dance.

Discovered for natural talent by dancers of advanced practice, Ian was already slated to dance in New York before entering professional dance school at the age of 34. Pushed forward by an invisible hand, Ian went on to study every level of “contemporary dance” simultaneously (junior to senior) in a nationally-recognized institution AT THE SAME TIME THAT  Ian was directing an established professional dance organization & dancing for various local & national level choreographers.

After 4 four years of this intensive dance activity, Ian moved to India to experience dance further & beyond.

But India was not random: Ian had already been studying Indian classical dances & music for years in Winnipeg within various contexts, including The India School of Dance, Music & Theatre. In Kerala & wider India, Ian studied & performed numerous forms of classical, sacred & ritual dance.

The pandemic saw Ian return home to Winnipeg; upon which time Ian developed “new dance” in solo & ensemble capacities.

New Dance is the dancer’s art: dance of & by the dancer, as it is meant to be; not the choreographer’s excluding domain of pre-construction. New Dance puts absolute trust in a divine plan; now, the dancer need only let it happen. You are already a work of art.

Ian currently self-presents, conducts workshops & coaches. Ian is now opening this practice as a School of Natural Dancers, starting September 2023.

With this school, Ian advances perhaps the only self-empowering ALTERNATIVE to EXCLUSIVE & ABILIST & AGEIST centres/programs for performance dance … anywhere.

See for yourself — come to a performance before school begins!

Fo new dance by Ian, look out for New Dance Monthly -- now running last Sundays of the month @ CAC https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/new-dance-monthly-tickets-593098462467 — Ian also performs variously throughout the year — look out for announcements on this blogger.com.
